Poet Jimmy Santiago Baca Headlines Fundraiser for the Cuban Five's cause in San Francisco
National Committee to Free the Cuban Five
  2009-12-01

Friday, December 11, San Francisco:

On Friday, December 11, three days after the re-sentencing in Miami of Cuban Five heroes Ramón Labañino and Fernando González, a major public event will be held in San Francisco to re-affirm the U.S. and international campaign for the immediate freedom of the Five.

Jimmy Santiago Baca is one of the nation's most celebrated Chicano poets. This is his second appearance for the Cuban Five, the first being in Colorado Springs in October. Jimmy Baca has embraced the Five's cause as his own, and he will read poems of Antonio Guerrero, as well as from his new novel, A Glass of Water.

Also featured on the program are special guests Jack Hirschman, former poet laureate of San Francisco, and Puerto Rican singer/guitarist Ronald Rosario. Ramón's and Gerardo Hernández's poetry will also be read. Gloria La Riva, who will have just returned from the Miami re-sentencing for Ramón and Fernando, will give an update on the hearing and on the National Committee's vital work for the Five.

Date: Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, 7:00 pm (doors open 6:30 pm)
Location: Mission Cultural Center, 2868 Mission St., San Francisco, CA (one block from 24th & Mission BART)
Donation: $10 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

The President of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power, Ricardo Alarcón, again this week urged the worldwide solidarity movement to redouble its efforts on behalf of the Cuban Five. With the explicit acknowledgment from the U.S. government during the Oct. 13 re-sentencing of Antonio that the worldwide movement plays a major role in the U.S. government's calculations, the importance of our work is clearer than ever.

Please help us to continue that work and join us on Dec. 11. If you can't make it, please make a donation to the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five. The event is co-sponsored by National Committee and the Middle East Children's Alliance.
