Keys for understanding the trial |
Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Ramón Labańino Salazar, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Fernando González Llort, and René González are five Cubans arrested in Florida in September 1998. They were tried and convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage and related charges in the one place they could not get a fair trial: Miami. Their case is typical of the political trials the United States criticizes as contrary to respect for human rights when they occur in other countries. |

The Real Reason of the Cuban Five case |
Ordinarily, if five people caught in the U.S. were working for another country, they would simply be returned to their home country. This is especially true if, like the Five, they were not armed and did not inflict injury or property damage. However, in this instance three of the Five are doing life and two are doing very long prison terms. That kind of hostile treatment is reserved solely for the Cuban Revolution. |
